About the Sleepout
The UVa Sleepout for the Homeless is a 7 night sleep-out fundraiser to raise money for Charlottesville Health Access, which provides medical screening and healthcare system navigation for homeless individuals in Charlottesville. During the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, it is customary for Jews to sleep outside in a temporary dwelling known as a Sukkah to commemorate the 40 years the Israelites spent wandering the desert after the Exodus from Egypt. In honor of this holiday, and in recognition of those in our community for whom sleeping outside is not an occasion to celebrate, the Jewish Social Justice Council and it's co-sponsors will be hosting the third annual Sleepout for the Homeless from Tuesday, October 14th to Tuesday, October 21st. During the sleepout, UVa students of all faiths will be sleeping out for 1-7 nights in the Sukkah and in tents next to Brown College and receiving sponsorships from their friends and families to do so. 100% of these sponsorships will go directly to Charlottesville Health Access. Over the past two years, sleepout participants have raised over $14,000 for local homelessness organizations.
